Our 28th annual convention in Primm, Nevada March 17 - 20, was one of our best attended and most successful in recent memory, if not ever. Over 176 members and 93 guests and prospective new members made their way to the warm and sunny climate in Primm, Nevada.
Convention packets, along with the buffet tickets, were passed out at the parking lot meet Wednesday morning. We were able to again move into the hall on Wednesday afternoon around 2 pm. It was nice to get out of the warm (82F) desert heat and sunny skies and into the beautiful carpeted air conditioned convention center. It's like attending a mini national convention for nearly half the price. Hotel rooms at the Primm Valley Resort and Casino Convention Center are under $40 per night and will be through 2012, our 30th year. The convention center is steps away from the Primm Valley Resort Casino and the fabulous outlet mall with over 100 shops and food court.
Nearly 204 tables were pre-sold for our convention this year. We had very few unsold tables this year. The buffet Welcome Reception on Wednesday night was held at the Primm Valley Resort followed at 8 pm by the Casino Fun Night Slot Tournament. Our big winner this year was Lee Vander Heide who walked away with $100 in cash. Second place went to Norma Andree with a $50 cash prize and John Spindler took third place with $25 in cash.
The Early Bird registration winner was Bob LaBrash from Arizona. Bob and his lovely wife Christin) had their hotel stay paid for in full by the Silver State Region. It pays to register early..... just ask Bob and his wife.
This year we tried something different with the Buy It Now option on the plates donated by the various DMV's. Many plates were sold before the auction started. Our Buy It Now and donation auction this year netted over $6500.00, a record for the Silver State Region.
Thursday morning our attendees were invited to join us for the free Continental Breakfast in the Convention Hall sponsored jointly by the Silver State Region and Motor Vehicle License Systems, the official supplier of the Silver State souvenir license plates.
We had two very special guests who attend from the Motor Vehicle Department in Pago Pago, American Samoa; Ms. Mary Putuga and Ms Malua Tauai. It was an honor to welcome them to our convention and they were so excited to attend. They had sent us a number of mint 2002 sequentially numbered plates in various categories and brought a few more dozen in their luggage. All of these were sold out to our members. A special thank you to Ms. Putuga and Ms. Tauai for their generous contribution to our very successful convention in Primm. Ms. Putuga is planning to sign up as a new member.
Once again we had some great displays of license plates this year. Rob Tyler took the Roy Carson Memorial award for his display of California sample plates:
Over 34 States, 4 Countries, 4 Canadian Provinces, Yukon Territory, and American Samoa were all represented this year in Primm.
None of this could have been accomplished without our volunteers. A special thank you to:
